C. K. Sharma on Employability Skills

One of the major reasons which adds to huge unemployment among the youth is the lack of
employability skills in them resulting in their not getting selected for job interviews.

One of the major reasons for candidates to get rejected in job interviews is their casual or indifferent
approach portrayed by them during the interview.

Lot of candidates do not take their job interview seriously. Due to some of the following reasons..

1.THE OPPORTUNITY IS NOT *useful or not appropriate AND therefore NOT WORTH THEIR EFFORT (SEE
POINT 10 BELOW)

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THIS DRIVES THE BEHAVIOUR , BODY LANGUAGE AND
COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF A CANDIDATE DURING THE INTERVIEW.

Take for example, a candidate who has been applying FOR MANY JOBS UNTIL HE GETS A BEST JOB (
AS PER HIS DEFINITION OF A GOOD OR BEST JOB) HE HAS STILL APPLIED FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY ,JUST
FOR GAINING EXPERIENCE OR JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE HAS TOLD HIM TO APPLY FOR IT ,ETC..

2. SOME CANDIDATES HAVE HUGE EGO AND OVERCONFIDENCE WHICH DOES NOT PERMIT THEM TO
BEHAVE PROPERLY OR RESPECT THE INTERVIEWER.

3. SOME ARE NOT INTERESTED IN THE “JOB ROLE” AT ALL BUT JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE JOBLESS THEY
APPLY.

4. SOME ARE VERY CLEAR IN THEIR MIND THAT” IF I DON’T GET THIS JOB HEAVENS ARE NOT GOING TO
FALL AND I AM CAPABLE OF GETTING A BETTER OPPORTUNITY”LATER.

5. SOME CANDIDATES ARE PURELY ARGUMENTATIVE AND QUARRELSOME AND FAIL TO UNDERSTAND
THE BASIC REQUIREMENT OF A JOB WHICH MOSTLY IS TO LISTEN AND TRY TO FOLLOW THE
WORK/WORD GIVEN TO THEM.

6. SOME CANDIDATES ARE NOT FOCUSED AND THEREFORE ARE NOT ABLE TO TAKE THE INTERVIEW
SERIOUSLY

7. SOME CANDIDATES ARE NOT AT ALL SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR CAREER AND FUTURE AND TAKE
EVERYTHING LIGHTLY.

8. SOME CANDIDATES DON’T LIKE WAITING FOR ANYTHING AND THEY DON’T HAVE PATIENCE TO
FOLLOW UP LATER BY CONTACTING THE COMPANY,IF TOLD TO DO SO.

9.SOME CANDIDATES APPLIED FOR THE JOB JUST BECAUSE THEIR PEER’S HAVE APPLIED FOR THE JOB OR
SOME ONE GUIDED THEM TO GO FOR THE JOB!

10. IN THE OPINION OF SOME CANDIDATES

THE JOB OPPORTUNITY IS NOT USEFUL AND NOT WORTH DUE TO SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING
REASONS

a. The company is small

They prefer big brands!

b. The remuneration declared by the company is not upto the mark as per the opinion of the candidate.

c. The job location or the job role is not of interest to them

d. Personal reasons like health , other preoccupations etc.

e. The candidate thinks he is over qualified or deserves a superior opportunity.

Note: In my experience of more than 30 years I have observed that a large percentage of candidates who
apply for jobs are really not serious about the opportunity and many of them don’t know how to
portray the necessary seriousness during an interview.

A number of candidate don’t understand/know the following important points..

Viz…

A. Before they start applying for jobs they should know why they are applying for the job?

B. Which type of job(role) they are looking for?

C. which is the location I.e. exactly where they want to do the job?

D. When exactly do they want to start the job.

For each candidate, Knowing the answer to this question is very important because once selected most
of the companies ask the candidate to join immediately or asap and which some are unable to agree to
as they have not decided their joining dates due to many personal reasons of their own(for example,
exams, personal events ,health, etc.) they are not able to join as per the dates given to them, and they
end up loosing the opportunity.

Since they are not clear with the answers to the above questions they are not able to attend the
interviews satisfactorily.
